Shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, at a home in the 18000 block of Sage Way, a man answered a knock at the door and three armed suspects forced their way inside. This happened at a townhouse in the Cinnamon Woods subdivision.

Here’s a good account of the home invasion by The Washington Post. And one by the Gazette.

If you look on the internet, people have commented about the Cinnamon Woods subdivision, sometimes called Criminal Woods. A woman with a screen name of firefightermom writes on a discussion group, “Germantown is going down and not slowly…gangs are very prevalent here, even in the grade schools, such as Fox Chapel. The Brandermill development has regular police activity, as does Cinnamon Woods. The local cops call the area the Wild West.”

Another discussion group user calling himself TrippingJay writes, “I work in Germantown and agree that the general consensus is that there are some good areas and some bad areas. Cinnamon Woods [and others] are the not so great areas as these areas have a lot of low income housing. I believe a lot of people from SE DC and PG county have moved to Germantown which has unfortunately resulted in higher crime. The closer you are to Boyds, Richter Farm Dr, or the area close the Kentlands are the better parts of Germantown.”

My observation is that there are many good Germantown subdivisions, and a few that are more dangerous.

Germantown is no stranger to home invasions.

Montgomery County Police press release for this incident and a home invasion in 2007.
