finally, blackrock has a new executive director

BlackRock Center for the Arts has a new Executive Director, Charlotte Sommers. The Gazette reports that Sommers started Tuesday, July 1st. Sommers spent the last week of June training with the previous executive director who left earlier in the year.

One of Sommers’ specialties is fundraising, and it is apparent that that was one of the reasons she was hired. Nevertheless, BlackRock has already failed in the finance area. Montgomery County has already had to purchased the BlackRock building itself. Ouch.

Sommers has an interest in the performing arts. She has also dabbled in fine arts journalism. Her writing has appeared in various Washington area arts publications, as well as Washingtonian Magazine. In a 2005 theatre piece, she prophetically writes about the challenges of performing arts fundraising.

Her writing tagline often states something like “Charlotte Sommers is an arts journalist whose knowledge is grounded in experience as an actor, choreographer, and arts administrator.”

The Gazette piece is much better than this at getting to know Sommers.

In 2003 the county saved BlackRock from financial troubles by purchasing the building in 2003 and renting it back to the arts organization for a nominal monthly fee.

BlackRock has prepared a bio for Sommers. Contact Sommers at 240.912.1054 or email .
